The other founders were Rod Larsen and Bradford Powell.
We had realized that information was hard to get about the commercial furniture industry, that the industry was full of magazines that were not critical, and that the news was usually 3 months after the fact, which rendered that information worthless.
We targeted a complete industry newsletter, including Design Firms, Distributors, Manufactures, Researchers, and Design Schools.
Interviews included the CEO’s of Knoll, Herman Miller, Steelcase, and Haworth. European furniture leaders like Rolf Fehlbaum and Piero Moltani. Designers included Robert Propst, Frank Gehry, and Niels Diffrient. Interior design firms included Gensler (Art Gensler and Margo Grant), Interior Architects (David Mourning), and many other notable firms.
Officeinsight, faxed out on Sunday nights, became a must read on Monday mornings throughout the commercial design industry and lead to a readership of over 20,000.
We also started DesignDaysNY, an industry sponsored trade show with the aim of attracting college students into the furniture and interior design industry. The show paid for design students to come to NYC to tour showrooms and hear lectures in the showrooms.
DesignDaysNY hosted 600 design students to a dim sum dinner in Chinatown and picked 20 students to win chairs donated by sponsors in a game of musical chairs, accompanied by a steel drummer playing “My Favorite Things!”
