All Unedited Student Evaluations

Fall 2023, undergrad Practice Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • • the teacher makes the history class into a fun design storm class that is not boring.

    • Interesting Lectures, Friendly teacher, creative work to do

    • Fun, you learn a lot about the big names you always hear but might not know

    • Appropriate workload Attractive course presentation Systematic learning

    • I loved the professor's sense of humor, how the lectures he gave were very informative yet engaging with the occasional jokes. It made me look forward to this class every week.

    • Weekly furniture homework based on each styles; Covers a good timeline of history of furniture; Skilled teacher and fellow students.

    • You get what you want out of this class, dependent on the level of effort you're willing to expend. His perspective on non-traditional scholastic learning is interesting with little homework and not having to memorize the coursework. However the execution falls short, because of minimal class discussion it's difficult to retain any information.

How can this class be improved?

• I hope it will be an in-campus class

• Give George a TA! And make the evaluations public for everyone to see

• Stay the way it is.

• Nothing comes to mind.

• There were technical difficulties often that was difficult to fix on both ends.

• The powerpoint lectures have little organization, sometimes starting with a theme and veering into topics adjacent but with no particular conclusion about why the designers he chose or the eras he

chose hold importance. This class would be more informative if each lecture was more structured with more historical context and how it relates to our society today. The notes that this professor

provides on the powerpoint tend more to be presentation notes for the professor than for us students to understand. His tendency to lecture for 2 hours straight makes it hard to maintain

concentration, and having some class discussions about the designs he shows or in classwork would give us the opportunity to learn more about the subject matter while also getting to know our

fellow classmates, especially for a online class setting.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

• Great class to learn if interested in environment design

• It's fun

• The class is very fun, with a relaxing and friendly environment. The workload is also very appropriate and fun to do. I always enjoyed the homework in this class. The professor is amazing, with

knowledge in his field and the humor and attitude to make it very enjoyable.

• I recommend this course because I feel that I have found an appreciation for furniture that I didn't have before and I've gained a lot of great insights on what makes a comfortable space.

• This class should be in person. This professor has a hard time with teaching students online.

Spring 2023, undergrad Practice Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • High-quality learning section interesting assignment funny teaching atmosphere

  • Very informative, the instructor always makes student learning a priority, the homework is a lot of fun

  • It's a fun class and you can see how students in different majors approach furniture work. The instructor is very knowledgeable, and also very supportive of students. The topic of furniture is very interesting for students who don't major in industrial design majors, it is a fun trial to get to know about the topic.

  • High level of student participation Clear presentation by the lecturer High level of appreciation

  • The class was helpful, engaging and fun with lots of design-related homework.

  • 1) The amount of freedom with the homework- there is a prompt, but we are allowed to explore. 2) The lectures are very interesting. I learned something new every time. 3) George is entertaining and makes his learning fun, great personality

  • -Lecture is interesting -Designing furniture as assignments is really fun -Good class to learn furniture design history

  • 1. Great professor with actual industry background 2. Fast-paced presentation that doesn't make students bored 3. Interactiveness(Especially regarding showing the actual chair on-screen as an example)

How can this class be improved?

  • So great for me

  • Good as it is!

  • I think it suits me well so far, and the instructor is very efficient. I think this is good.

  • I thought everything was pretty clear. The class was very helpful.

  • The only way the class can be improved, is maybe in the expectations of quality from the teacher. Some students would turn in messy or unfinished work, and it might be better if the teacher was a bit more strict on that, to help them.

  • It's all good

  • Hopefully in the near future, it can come back as a offline class again.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • A really interesting learning process. It is good for us to learn about the designer and their iconic products.

  • it's just a normal humanity class

  • The instructor really values students' learning process and also acknowledges the topic very much. He knows exactly who and which piece of work you are referring to right away.

  • You can learn a lot about furniture, designers and architecture. I think this is very helpful for a product design student. Improve aesthetics and awareness.

  • I would recommend this class to a friend because it is a fun class and I'm sure my friend will learn things from this class.

  • I had a lot of fun in this class and got exposed to a different side of design. It took me out of focusing only on my major, and made me appreciate furniture.

  • I would recommend to someone who has strong interest in designing furniture.

  • This course has been one of my all-time favorite courses that I have taken so far at Artcenter. The class gave me a lot of new information that I didn't yet know about, and the assignments were fun and a direct way to understand the era and the designers of the time. Even though the class was held online, he used his camera to actually show multitude of chairs that was shown in the presentation itself, so that we could have a better grasp and knowledge of that chair. It was a great class, and I would love to actually listen again if it becomes available offline.

I got a lot of inspirations from classic designs and this class really opened my eyes as a designer. My passion for furnitures and lightnings grew from learning about the great design pieces.

  • This class helped me learn a lot about history and make a lot of designs

How can this class be improved?

  • I wished we could have gone out to furniture markets to see and feel classic pieces! But because of this semester's schedule we did not get a chance to.

  • I wish I could get more character choices in assignments.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • I think learning from the designers and designs before us is essential and very beneficial. This aids me to better understand our advancements in furnitures throughout the years and it was really intriguing to me to see designs from decades ago to be still modern to this day. How can this class be improved?

  • More involvements for students in class

  • This class can be improved if instructors allowed everyone in the class to become more socially active and discuss certain topics related to the subject to expand the mindset and knowledge for the given assignments and the purpose of the class.

  • The class was generally complete. Personally, I had a class right after this class, so I think reducing the amount of class PDF a little will help finish it in time for the class.

  • N/A

  • Make it longer! Allow George to talk more!

  • Nothing need to improved!!! really ike the class

  • None. The best HS class I have ever took.

  • i would've liked this class in person as well--seeing furniture in real life.

  • because it was on a thursday, we had to extend class to week 14 which was inconvenient since i wanted to focus on finals the last two weeks. if the class could be condensed to week 12 that would be great.

  • nothing

  • I think its good as is :)

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • Fun class. Helpful for all industrial design majors.

  • I believe students who take this class will be able to discover far beyond more and become interested in several curriculum related to the subject of the class. It will positively change the way the student thinks about the whole meaning of art.

  • Overall, the class was satisfactory and I learned a lot.

  • I loved the homework assignments - it was really great to have assignments where I had a lot of freedom to create and imagine!

  • Good class

  • Really Like the class

  • Such a fun and good class.

  • I have already recommended this class to other students because the professor is informative, but still a fun and interesting class. I like furniture and interior design, so for me, this class was a good balance for an illustration student. It wasn't too intense, but it still presented a challenge in terms of ideating and producing furniture designs.

  • it's a fun class, but the TA this term was kind of cold and condescending at times. it felt like she was even stricter than the teacher and was not very approachable.

  • it's a good class

  • i feel like I've learned a lot about not just furniture, but famous figures I didn't know before. Really helps to understand the context of furniture and art in general. The homework have also really helped me remember furniture designers

  • one of my favorite classes

  • I enjoyed how open the class was which allowed me to experiment with different approaches with styles that I've yet to do in other classes.

  • You don't get people with this much experience teaching at ArtCenter anymore. He has had great working experience and personally knows a lot of designers that you can find in furniture books. He can tell you stories that you would never find on your own. This class opened my eyes to furniture design history.

  • i like this class and professor.

  • Have more students involved in the course

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • I don't find any other course that teach furniture history, but most of the courses are art history in general.

  • Honestly, this class was one-of-a-kind! George gave it it's own unique personality, so I don't see anything that needs to be improved.

  • Nothing really to do when we are still having the online class form. I believe the class can be even better when doing in person sessions.

  • No need

  • There are video materials and they're not effectively shown as expected in the class. Most of the cases due to the bad internet connection or technical issues. • I would have loved to see more lectures on manufacturing chairs - materials, textiles, types of finishes, methods to make chairs.

  • offer it every season/term

  • This course is really useful for people who were interested in furniture , and it would be helpful for students who wants to be a furniture designer.

  • Fair amount of work for each week. George is a humorous instructor. The lecture session is not boring as some other H&S classes. For non-design major student, this class really pushes you to step forward and design your first furniture.

  • If you want a class where you feel like you've actually learned something worthwhile at the end of term, take this class. I wish all of my academic classes and some of my studios were as useful as this one. I learned about different segments of furniture, design, and history while trying to apply those concepts to design per week. You learned Bauhaus, now try to design Bauhaus. You learned Italian, now try to design Italian. Overall, a simple, informative class where the stakes aren't so high and you're allowed to enjoy designing. Thank you.

  • it’s great.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • Fun homework, great instructor and TA, learn a lot from classmates and lectures I already recommended this class to most of my friends

  • This class is a great way to break up the heavy schedule of Artcenter. It has the challenge of a studio class, but way more of an open range for students to explore and discover freely. • i think right now is pretty good

  • N/A I think this class is great

  • Better internet connection, but its all good, we understand there will be connecting issues with online classes.

  • Hardly. It's pretty perfect the way it is right now. Other classes should be improved to match the standard of this class, especially academic classes but studios as well. It takes a lot of instructor's personality to make it work, but also how willing they are to make the class fun for the students and not just for themselves.

  • I think is perfect already!

  • Everything was amazing, nothing needs to be improved.

Summer 2020, undergrad Practice Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • really interesting: A passion for each projects. learned how to present and communicate learned a lot of knowledge and interesting designs

  • Very Inclusive He uses miniature furniture and furnitures in his apartment to demonstrate Very knowledge as a professional in the furniture industry

  •  Practice Interaction ...

  • very inclusive, engaging, inspiring, deep in knowledge

  • fun entertaining meaningful

  • Enthusiasm from the teacher as well as covering a broad range of topics. A compilation of essential furniture designers in history, so the knowledge was essential. Coverage of culture and music for the appropriate time period.

How can this class be improved?

  • Everyone has encountered zoom glitch, so there is no need to apologies, we all understand. I hope George can share the recorded video with us so that we can refer back. I hope there could be more manufacturing process being introduced, just like the Thonet wood bending video.

  • It would be better if the TA could embed the video into the presentation smoother. Looking forward to see more furniture related documentaries in both class and assignments. Hope I would have the opportunity to rejoin the class's field trips in later terms.

  • teachers common on homeworks in clas cold be more indepth

  •  Audio/Visual problems, but something that be easily fixed.

  • This is a very informative class about furniture history, and George shows us a lot of iconic furniture pieces either in his apartment or by Vitra miniature collections. Very mind blowing.

  • It was very enjoyable to have extra education in music, having a slide in the beginning of the presentation about what you saw and it was bad design and seeing how you critic it. It has been wonderful also to see how you show your respect to women in design and celebrate them in design and music. Overall I can just say, this class has been my favorite this term and I can not say to improve anything. It has been very great and very cultural

  • Great instructor with profound knowledge of furniture design and interesting narrating way. Great introduction and start for beginner of furniture design. I totally felt the charm of furniture in this class.

  • I like the class its nice to learn about furniture.

  • An essential class about furniture and it's history that is important for any designer. This class doesn't cover just furniture, and I believe it's important for everyone. There is also a weekly design assignment based on the era and time period we were learning about, and that was very fun and informative.

  • George definitely needs a TA to help him with zoom glitch some time. That will help the class move smooth, and Hannah, our TA this term, did an awesome job. George did well in adapting to online experience.

  • Please provide more tech support for senior instructors. Not only zoom meeting techs but also different ways of introducing new materials into the class. Steps or illustration of instructions could be provided.

  • not much

  • Videos and slide presentations can be cleaned up so there is less jumping back and forth between presentation and youtube video.

Spring 2020 classes were switched from in-person to online teaching due to Covid and no Evaluations were performed.

Fall 2019, graduate History of Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • Emphasis on creating a passion in furniture as well as its history Open discussions about what we think works and what doesn't Feeling comfortable enough to ask questions and engage with the material further

  • George’s ability to personalize furniture movements and relate them to the cultural movements that would’ve affected design at the time. George’s respect for students learning. George’s excitement and strong opinions, though I didn’t agree with him on everything, I believe a strong opinion does force everyone (hopefully) to question why they enjoy the pieces of furniture that they do. And encourages everyone (definitely) to be just as strongly opinionated and excited about furniture design.

  • Inspiring. Creative. Amazing

  • Amazing George, Great Content, Awesome class This is the best class to learn about Furniture design. Thank you!

He provided a comprehensive entry point into furniture history that could be expanded on and referenced in future design projects. He made the learning of history and furniture something I think the entire class looked forward to on our early Fridays. It was a great class to have to help bring down the stress of everything else that we had to do during the term. He instilled a passion for learning about these pieces and understanding the context in which they came from and the people who developed the ideas. Overall, the class helped me become more familiar with furniture and made me much more confident in my design choices in other classes where I didn't have confidence before. I am so grateful for this class being apart of the graduate curriculum especially in the first term.

Summer 2019, undergrad Practice Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • George makes the class really interested and engaged. I think he is one of the best teachers in Artcenter. I used to feel history and academic is really boring but because of him, I feel it is really easy to learn. Hope he could teach more classes for undergrad.

  • He is fun and class is enjoyable

  •  funny, relaxed, new

  • 1: very interesting and engaging 2: homework is light but helpful, helps you recall what you learned and also allowing a chance for you to practice presentation. 3: FIELD TRIPS ! it was really good 4: George bringing in furnitures every class.

  • The instructor is knowledgeable of what he is going to teach for the whole class. Specially speaking, when talking about one furniture, he would always give more than enough information behind that piece, and things he used to teach during the class were relatively related to each other, helping students to remember those art works better.

  • 1. able to see and feel the physical furnitures, not just images from the slideshow. 2. field trip is awesome. 3. overall atmosphere in the class is chill and relax but still learn something.

  • The topic you learn and how in depth you go. The teacher is very charismatic and funny, make the topic even more fun. The actual 3d models of the chair the teacher brings.

  • we all have chance to present on class and share ideas we learn a lot about furniture history and this class is not too long for us to focus

  • His knowledge towards furniture and furniture history which can help students from all kinds of departments Students are be able to talk about different furnitures and do presentation about them, and they are be able to analyze successful or unsuccessful designs. Students are getting to see all of his resources (ex. Books and real furnitures)

  • George is a blast, fun, critical, with loads of industry experience and wisdom.

How can this class be improved?

  • He is great already.

  • If the filed trip can be arranged earlier in the term would be great

  • nothing, it is amazing already.

  • NA

  • It would be better if there could be a TA to help the instructor to prepare around before the class(helping to carry the furniture he brought to class), and assisting him to monitor the computer while he is giving lectures.

  • I love the field trip, hope to have more field trips to see the famous architectures and furnitures.

  • I found the experience of the furniture tour really amazing, you learn lot on looking how this object look like in real person and visiting this key design places in LA was also amazing, I would love to do it more for the class.

  • maybe do more field trip at different places􏰁 and then do a course there. So we can really understand and feel those furnitures.

  • I wish he does not change the way he is teaching the class.

  • I have no complaints. In fact I wish there was a follow up studio version of the course, or something similar that george co-taught perhaps a topic studio furniture with an emphasis on creating a production prototype, etc... I do wish some of our fellow classmates were more vocal in discussion. George effectively took note of this and respectfully prompted discussion through the semester. My observation is that perhaps the culture of the product/environmental departments is more quiet/reserved than some others at the school, at least from my experience this reigns mostly true. More of a criticism of the critique/discussion culture/expectation that seems to be lacking in the foundation year of prod/env.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • George is a great teacher.

  • The class is interesting. George is really knowledgeable.

  • This is my favourite class through out my five terms in artcenter, the professor has so much passion in this topic that he always inspire me through his teaching. I am very happy that I took this class, I think the knowledge I gained in this class exceeds my expectation by a lot, thank you george !

  • The workload is relatively great and the course will provide you with base knowledge before taking furniture design class.

  • I'm not from environmental design major, but I always love architectures and furnitures. This class provide appropriate of knowledge about architectures and furnitures from both history and styling aspects, but not so deep that make students who from other majors hard to understand. I enjoy the field trip a lot, hope to have more field trip!

  • Is a really good class if you want some design and furniture history with a more fresh perspective, George has his own perspective and is really fun and useful to learn.

  • Furniture is a new topic for me. It is really interested and really fun to know these knowledges, I hope this class can be listed in illustration department classes. This class will help you understand more about thinking for customers and how to communicate with people.

  • It was a very good class for me to take as illustration / entertainment art student. It helped me understanding different furnitures and shapes that can be useful when I am designing sets for animation. And his personality and passion towards furnitures inspired students all the time, so I was getting positive energy from him every time I came to the class. The class general is introduction of design history especially from modern era to contemporary time which helped me have better understanding about how design trends had been changed. So I think it is good class for Art Center students from all majors to take, and I highly recommend this class.

  • This class is intellectually enticing, highly informative, and fun. When learning and wisdom are presented through wit, discussion, and embodied experience whats not to like.

Spring 2019, undergrad Practice Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • 1. George is actually funny (to look at) 2. He really is passionate about what he’s teaching. 3. Very realistic teacher and shows he cares by bringing in furniture every week

  • •01. Georges knowledge of the furniture industry - it is insightful, and eye opening to an industry that was previously hard to learn about. 02. Georges lectures - George uses a lecture based method of teaching that is easy to follow and create an easy to remember mental model of historical timelines. 03. Examples - each class George brings in an iconic piece of furniture design that he then breaks down through observation and analysis

  • Understanding the subjects of course in broader context Talking freely about design with the instructor Having real furniture examples that instructor brought by himself in the classroom while his lecturing

  • great knowledge in furniture opening with jazz field trip to the eames house • RELAXING, EYE-OPENING, INSPIRING

  • First Quality is George always brings the actual furniture piece to class that is relevant to lecture and not only bringing them asks us to sit and observe the piece Second, his lecture is always filled with info and organized so well and clear what the point is . Third, field trip was awesome !

  • • interesting Involving Critical opinions about design • informative, interactive, and comprehensive.

  • WE GOT THE CHANCE TO SIT ON MANY ICONIC CHAIRS BROUGHT BY GEORGE FROM HIS OWN COLLECTION! IT IS AWSOME! ACTUALLY SITTING ON A CHAIR IS REALLY HELPFUL TO LEARN FURNITURE!

  • George's passion and coverage of each designer, highlighting their significance incredibly engaging. Historical knowledge Business knowledge as it applies to designers, coming from someone with decades of production furniture experience Cultural background to each designer and homework that highlighted what defines true innovation Seeing authentic furniture pieces firsthand

  • 1. It's fun compare to most other academic classes. 2. Our instructor is knowledgeable and humorous. 3. It's interesting and inspiring. It's a class about furniture production but it covers design in general, which is really useful.

  • George is a wealth of information that makes that class fun and entertaining. His stories and life experience are awesome and it really captivates you to apply yourself in the class and learn as much as you could. He made the information fun to learn about and was a vault of furniture knowledge.

How can this class be improved?

  • Less crits, they take so long and it’s a shorter class to begin with.

  • This class could benefit from more secondary research done on the students part. Required reading would help progress students knowledge of furniture and design in general and allow for deeper in class discussions.

  • Focus on the less the quantity of people to present and focus on the quality of each designer

  • I LIKE THE WAY IT IS. PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE IN A RELAXED WAY WHICH IS PRETTY NICE ADDITION TO ACCD LIFE.

  • classroom it self has trouble the tech in the room has trouble all the time. like Grad ID if we have Apple tv or other wireless hub it will be so much better and simple to see

  • maybe talk more about how those chair made and how is the marketing methods

  • instructor though knowledgable in many ways often resorts to personal opinions on certain subjects. I find it best to keep political and religious worldviews outside of the classroom providing the fact that it may be an obstacle for students to form a genuine opinion.

  • MAKE IT 14 WEEKS PLEASE!

  • This class would be hard to improve, sincerely. George's knowledge, passion and experience for the subject could not be outdone.

  • Nothing, George is an amazing teacher and his enthusiasm and excitement make the topic fun to learn about.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • I liked the course because I like learning about history, so I found it interesting.

  • This class is not only entertaining, but educational about a focused industry that ArtCenter does not have any other classes related to. The ability to learn from about a specific design movement in lecture, and then look at that piece of design right in front of you is irreplaceable. Design history is an often overlooked thing at ArtCenter and George's ability to relate it to the contemporary landscape is priceless.

  • It was great to understand the history of furniture in a broader context that covers from cultural to historical aspect. And the fact that it is focused on only furniture, even though he covered a bit of others, wa nice and appropriate to go little deeper then other classes like history of ID.

  • great for people that wants beginning knowledge of furniture and the history of designers.

  • ONE OF FEW INSTRUCTORS THAT DRIVE ME THINK MORE INSTEAD OF BLINDLY FOLLOWING SOME CONCEPT. LOVE THIS COURSE

  • its good to have furniture history class which we didnt had and George points out the problems in manufacture and production that we must consider. also good opportunity to get to practice the presentation too

  • if you are really into the furniture design, this class is a good beginning

  • A great class to go through if you want to learn a well-rounded history of art and furniture, also the prof truly has your best interest in mind.

  • George's real-world experience and historical insight provided incredible reference and understanding to each piece, each designer, and each movement. He also brought in authentic pieces from his own collection each class so we could see and appreciate each design firsthand George did a great job of showcasing the relation that the designers had to their culture, political climate, music, geographical area, and other designers. These historical references created a framework for truly innovative design and highlighted the significance of each design. Firsthand stories from someone deeply involved in the business side also gave us young designers an insider perspective into how the production furniture industry runs. From small, one-off pieces to full-scale production I have a much deeper understanding of the world of production furniture. This should be a required class for any industrial designer and I'm sad there's not more classes available like it for every type of design.

  • George is a great instructor. He brings sample pieces of furniture to the class every week, and he encourages students to actually see and touch the famous designs in history. The way he teaches the class led us to comprehensively understand the history and philosophy behind each piece of furniture and its designer.

Fall 2018, graduate History of Production Furniture

What are the three best qualities of the class?

  • George was a great teacher. Very knowledgable and is a very good lecturer

  • 1. George is amazing. He knows the industry like no one I have yet met. 2. Field trips to experience history in person were much appreciated. 3. Seminar style discussions with the whole class are fantastic to fill in holes in knowledge and shift biases.

How can this class be improved?

  • I would love to have more current furniture production business practices.

  • 5 hours is way too long for a lecture class.

How likely are you to recommend this class and why?

  • If you are interested in furniture design I would recommended it. However, if the class is still 5 hours long I would not recommend.

  • George is amazing. When we talked about the class with other students, they expressed interest in taking it; some even joined us on the field trips or stopped by for a lecture.
